What Is OCD?
Tip/Education Tuesday with Come Alive Counseling
OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder) is much more than liking a clean house.
OCD involves unwanted, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) that create anxiety. To try to feel better, a person may engage in behaviors or mental rituals (compulsions) to reduce that anxiety.
For someone with OCD, those thoughts don't just come and go—they can get stuck.
What if I made a mistake?
What if I forgot something important?
What if something bad happens?
Tip to Deal With Intrusive Thoughts
Try labeling the thought instead of arguing with it.
When an intrusive thought pops up, practice saying:
“That's an OCD thought,”
rather than asking yourself if it's true.
You don't have to solve every thought, but simply noticing it for what it is can be the first step toward breaking the cycle.
If OCD is making everyday life feel overwhelming, therapy can help. You don't have to face it on your own, and recovery is possible with the right support.
